The 2022 Jockey Club Hong Kong Coaching Awards Presentation Ceremony was held at the HKSI today, recognising coaches who made outstanding contributions to the development of sports at the elite, community and school levels in 2022.

A total of 197 nominations were received this year. A list of 162 coaches received awards in seven categories, namely Coach of the Year Awards, Distinguished Services Award for Coaching, Coach Education Award, Best Team Sport Coach Award, Coaching Excellence Awards, Community Coach Recognition Awards and School Coach Recognition Awards.

Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung GBS JP, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism; Ms Donna Tang, Executive Manager, Charities (Sports and Culture), The Hong Kong Jockey Club; and Mr Tony Yue Kwok-leung BBS MH JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Coaching Committee (HKCC), officiated at the presentation ceremony.

Mr Tony Yue Kwok-leung expressed his appreciation to sport coaches in his welcoming speech, “Hong Kong athletes achieved impressive results in many international competitions in 2022. We should give recognition to all coaches, including those at elite, community and school levels, who have laid a solid foundation for sports development in Hong Kong.” He also thanked the HKSAR Government and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for their full support of the HKCC.

The Coach of the Year Awards (COY) have always been the highlight of the presentation ceremony. Fencing coach Gregory Koenig and boccia coach Kwok Hart-wing were awarded in the senior athletes - individual sport category; squash coach Chiu Wing-yin and para badminton (physical disability) coach Liew Nammin were honoured in the senior athletes - team event category; wushu coach Wong Chi-kwong received the award in the junior athletes - individual sport category; while table tennis coach Jiang Xinpei took the award in the junior athletes - team event category.

Coach Gregory Koenig has been awarded the COY title twice in a row. Under his leadership, Cheung Ka-long won gold at the Men’s Foil World Cup 2022 – Paris and captured bronze at the World Fencing Championships 2022, with both achievements making history for men's fencing in Hong Kong. Coach Kwok Hart-wing takes the COY title for the fifth time. In 2022, the boccia team won 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals at the World Boccia Cup and grabbed 2 bronze medals at the Boccia World Championships 2022 under his guidance.

Coach Chiu Wing-yin earned the COY title for the fourth time, after leading Chan Sin-yuk, Ho Tze-lok, Lee Ka-yi and Tong Tsz-wing to win gold at the 21^st Asian Squash Team Championships; coach Liew Nammin has been awarded the COY title three times consecutively. Under his guidance, both Chu Man-kai and Wong Chun-yim won bronze at the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2022.

Coach Wong Chi-kwong was awarded his fifth COY title this year after leading four wushu athletes to win 2 gold and 3 silver medals at the 8^th World Junior Wushu Championships; coach Jiang Xinpei, who led Chan Ho-wah and Wong Hoi-tung in winning bronze at the Asian Junior & Cadet Table Tennis Championships 2022, was awarded his first COY title.

The Distinguished Services Award for Coaching went to billiard sports coach Wayne Griffiths for his devoted contribution spanning more than a decade. He has been serving as Head Billiard Sports Coach of the HKSI since 2010, guiding athletes including Fu Ka-chun, Lee Chun-wai and Ng On-yee to win medals in international competitions ranging from the World Championships and the Asian Games, to the Asian Championships.

The Coach Education Award was granted to volleyball coach Law Wing-fai. In an effort to promote volleyball and raise the bar for the sport locally, he has been dedicated to training local volleyball coaches and compiling level 1 coach courses, training manuals and syllabuses since 1996. The coaches of the Hong Kong team, the A1 and A2 teams of the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China and the elite school teams have all benefited from his work.

Coach Wu Xincheng, Head Coach of the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association since 2021, lifted his first Best Team Sport Coach Award by leading the team to win a bronze medal and six runners-up accolades at the 14^th Asian Dragon Boat Championships last year.

A total of 93 coaches were awarded Coaching Excellence Awards for leading athletes or sports teams to achieve outstanding results at international competitions in 2022, while 38 coaches received the Community Coach Recognition Awards in recognition of their contributions to the community. In addition, 22 full-time teachers were presented the School Coach Recognition Awards to acknowledge their efforts at the local school level.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has funded HKCC’s programmes through donations totalling over HK$24 million since November 2015. The programmes include the Jockey Club Elite Coaching Development Programmes; the Jockey Club Coaching Accreditation Programmes; and the Jockey Club Community Education and Coach Recognition Programmes to further support the career development of coaches. The annual Jockey Club Hong Kong Coaching Awards falls under the Jockey Club Community Education and Coach Recognition Programmes, which recognise coaches’ contributions to athletes’ training and development in Hong Kong.

The Jockey Club Hong Kong Coaching Awards is organised by the HKCC, a joint committee of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the HKSI, which was established in 1991 with the aims of formulating and implementing short-term and long-term strategies for the development of coach education and accreditation programmes in Hong Kong. Over the years, more than 99,000 participants have benefited from the Programme.
