Dr Lam Tai-fai SBS JP, Chairman of the HKSI, congratulated the Hong Kong Delegation on adding two medals for Hong Kong, 1 silver and 1 bronze from badminton events, on the last day of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Hong Kong concluded the Paralympic Games with 2 silver and 3 bronze medals, a total of five medals.

The thirteen-day Paralympic Games ended today and Hong Kong badminton players Chu Man-kai and Chan Ho-yuen made their final appearance by competing in the men's SH6 singles final and men's WH2 singles bronze medal match respectively.

Chan Ho-yuen played in the men's WH2 singles bronze medal match against South Korea's Kim Kyung-hoon. Chan defeated Kim by 2:0 and sealed the bronze, the fourth Paralympic medal for Hong Kong. Chu Man-kai competed against India’s Krishna Nagar in the men's SH6 singles final. Despite eventually losing 1:2 to take a silver medal, he demonstrated his unparalleled hard work and fighting spirit.

Although Hong Kong's medal tally in this year's Paralympic Games was not as good as the Rio 2016 edition, Dr Lam highly praised all participating athletes, saying that each of them not only overcame their own disabilities, but also prepared for the Games under the pandemic, which made it even more difficult. The Delegation finished the Games with 2 silver and 3 bronze medals and truly deserved our applause. He hoped that members of public would continue to provide support and root for athletes in the future competitions.

Dr Lam pledged that the HKSI would, as usual, continue to effectively use the Government resources and work closely with the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee and Sports Association for the Physically Disabled and the Hong Kong Sports Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability to provide the most suitable training and all-round supporting facilities for athletes with disabilities, so that they could continue to strive for sporting success and bring more glory to Hong Kong in the future.

Through this year’s Paralympic Games, members of the public had a better understanding of athletes with disabilities. Dr Lam hoped that all sectors of the society, such as the business sector, would open up by providing more opportunities and support to these athletes in terms of sports development, life and work, allowing them to shine in other areas.
