Record High Public Participants at HKSI Open Day

The HKSI hosted an Open Day on 19 and 20 January 2019. Two days of sunny skies with fun-filled activities, and a record high of over 5,000 enrolment was recorded, reflecting growing public attention to elite sports development. The event offered a precious opportunity for the participants to walk into the HKSI’s world-class training facilities for elite athletes, as well as to get up close and personal with the elite athletes and learn about the training system and work of the HKSI.
As the Government’s designated organisation to provide the high performance training system for eligible sports, the HKSI aims to reinforce the public attachment to the development of elite sports in Hong Kong through the annual event, as well as to engage more schools to promote its initiatives of providing integrated education opportunities for young sporting talents, enabling them to pursue a sports career while maintaining academic excellence.
The first day (19 January) was exclusively designed for schools, during which students from 14 schools, including those under the HKSI’s Elite Athlete-friendly School Network and Partnership School Programme, toured the various barrier-free elite training facilities and took part in fitness tests and athletes’ sharing sessions.
The two-day Open Day featured guided tours for participants, showcasing the state-of-the-art training facilities, including the Athletic Field, Badminton Hall, Fitness Training Centre, Rowing Centre, Squash Courts, Swimming Complex, Table Tennis Hall, Tennis Courts, Tenpin Bowling Centre and Wushu Hall. Participants were able to take a glimpse behind the scenes of Hong Kong elite athletes training. Various activities such as “Meet the Athletes” session, “Healthy Kitchen”, a series of sports demonstrations and tryouts were also featured. Participants were impressed by the advanced facilities and all-round support that HKSI offers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Trisha Leahy BBS, Chief Executive of the HKSI, expressed her gratitude to the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB), the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (HKPC&SAPD), National Sports Associations (NSAs) and other sponsors and partners for their long-term support to the HKSI and the development of elite athletes. She hoped the public can get to know more about the athletes’ life through the Open Day and encouraged parents to help their children tap into their passions and talents in sports, in hopes of exploring opportunities to pursue a career as full-time athletes.
Also at the ceremony were elite athletes Lai Chun-ho (Athletics), Tse Ying-suet (Badminton), Robbie Capito (Billiard Sports), Ng Lok-wang (Fencing), Ng Kiu-chung (Gymnastics), Choi Wan-yu (Karatedo), Chiu Hin-chun (Rowing), Hugo Christopher (Rugby Sevens), Chan Tsin-nam (Skating), Wong Chi-him (Squash), Chan Kin-lok (Swimming), Masuda Sheena Jade Karrasch (Tennis), Wu Siu-hong, Tseng Tak-hin (Tenpin Bowling), Law Leong-tim (Triathlon), Lee Chun-ting (Windsurfing), Mok Uen-ying (Wushu) and Chung Yuen-ping (Sports for Athletes with Disabilities), who shared their training experiences with the audience. Tenpin Bowling World Champion Wu Siu-hong shared, “‘The sports science and technology of the HKSI allow us to analyse and evaluate each player’s techniques, which provides important information for coaches and the team to develop strategies for improving overall performance.’
In the “Meet the Athletes” session, Tse Ying-suet (Badminton), Robbie Capito (Billiard Sports), Ng Lok-wang (Fencing), and Chan Kin-lok (Swimming) shared their life as an elite athlete. The audience shared keen interest in training behind their successes and seized the great opportunities to interact and take photos with them. 1st runner-up of 2018 World Juniors 9-Ball Championships Robbie Capito remarked, “With the flexible curriculum jointly offered by the HKSI and my school, it enables me to train full-time as an athlete, while continuing to pursue my studies at the same time.”
In addition, the HKSI also provide tips for healthy diet and cooking during the “Healthy Kitchen”. Apart from instant photo booth, demonstrations and tryouts for various sports, including Cycling, Dragon Boat, Golf, Rowing, Rugby Sevens, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling and Triathlon were available for public at the Open Day, as well as interactive game booths by the HAB, the SF&OC and the HKPC&SAPD were available for public to unleash their sports potential at the HKSI.
The HKSI wishes the public can understand the works of the HKSI on the annual Open Day and continue to show their support to elite sports development.
