Hong Kong Sports Institute New Facilities Building Opens Advancing Training and Sports Science and Medical Support Services

The New Facilities Building of HKSI opened today, providing more state-of-the-art training facilities to further support elite athletes in their pursuit of excellence.
Officiating guests at the ceremony included The Hon Mr John Lee Ka-chiu GBM SBS PDSM PMSM, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Mr Wang Songmiao, Secretary General of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung GBS JP, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism; The Hon Mr Timothy Fok Tsun-ting GBM GBS JP, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; Mrs Jenny Fung Ma Kit-han SBS JP, President of the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, Mr Tang King-shing GBS PDSM, Chairman of the HKSI and Mr Tony Choi MH, Chief Executive of the HKSI. Distinguished guests from the Government and the sports community gathered to witness this significant milestone of the HKSI.
Mr Tang King-shing GBS PDSM, on behalf of the HKSI, expressed gratitude to the Government for its active drive of sports development and the expansion of the HKSI, including the accelerated construction of the New Facilities Building. This provides more advanced training facilities and enhances support in areas such as scientific conditioning training, sports science and medicine.
Mr Tang continued, “Looking ahead, Hong Kong's sports scene will flourish, including the opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park, various major sports events, the National Games and the National Games for Persons with Disabilities co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau in 2025, as well as the upcoming Asian Games and Asian Para Games. The New Facilities Building will enable athletes to focus on the systematic training, and showcase their world-class performance on the international stage.”
The Chief Executive of the HKSAR stated: “The Government has consistently supported the HKSI in training athletes. In the current financial year, we have allocated up to HK$940 million to the HKSI, an increase of over 40% compared to five years ago. The Government has also increased resources to focus on the development of sports science and sports medicine, further enhancing athletes’ competitiveness. The Sports Science and Research Funding Scheme, jointly funded by the government and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with an investment of HK$300 million, aims to improve athletes’ performance through research in sports medicine and sports science. The scheme has approved 27 research projects with funding exceeding HK$180 million, and many of the developed technologies have already been applied to athletes.”
After the ceremony, the attending guests toured the Fitness Training Centre 1 of the New Facilities Building and interacted with the table tennis and karatedo athletes to understand their experiences with the new venues and how they benefit from the support provided by sports science and medicine.
The three-storey New Facilities Building, located between the HKSI Rowing Centre and the Swimming Complex, has a net operating floor area of about 9,000m2. It houses Table Tennis Hall and Karatedo Hall, as well as two Fitness Training Centres, providing athletes with ample training space.
The design and structural layout of the New Facilities Building allow the HKSI to introduce more advanced sports science and medical facilities. The facilities, laboratories, and offices of five Centres, namely Scientific Conditioning Centre, Sport Biomechanics & Technology Centre, Sports Nutrition & Monitoring Centre, Sports Psychology Centre, Sports Medicine Centre, are relocated to the New Facilities Building, providing comprehensive and integrated support.
The top floor features 50-room sports residence area, available for use by overseas teams visiting Hong Kong or for exchange purposes.
