The HKSI has been proactively seeking additional resources from the Government to enhance the support to elite athletes and the development of elite sports with the ultimate goal of winning medals for Hong Kong at increasingly competitive major international competitions.  We are extremely pleased to learn today that the Government has positively addressed our concerns by increasing its support to elite athletes and taking forward the construction of a new multi-purpose building. This is a major boost to all elite athletes who are training hard to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Dr Lam Tai-fai SBS JP, Chairman of HKSI said, “International sport standards are higher and higher, and we must have world-class sport science and medicine to remain competitive in this environment.  Elite athletes have achieved many excellent results in recent years, with increased public recognition and appreciation.  This has contributed to a significant increase in the number of full-time athletes.  The construction of a new multi-purpose building is a pressing need.  The new multi-purpose building will provide greater capacity to accommodate additional sports science and sports medicine facilities, hostel spaces, indoor training venues, a state-of-the-art fitness training centre, and will help maintain HKSI’s status as a leading, world-class elite training centre.”

“In 2018 alone, Hong Kong athletes won 62 medals at various world championships and 94 medals at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games. These achievements can be attributed to HKSI’s unique elite sport system framework and the hard work and commitment of the elite athletes.  The proposed increase in the athlete subvention will definitely help attract more young talented athletes to consider full-time training, eventually bringing more honour and pride to Hong Kong.”

“The HKSI is also delighted to learn about the Government’s enhanced subvention to the National Sports Associations (NSAs).  This reflects Government’s commitment to the development of local sports.  The HKSI will continue to work together with the Government, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled and the NSAs to take elite sports development in Hong Kong to the next level.”
