HKSI Chairman Congratulates Siobhan Haughey on Creating History and Winning the Second Gold at the World Swimming Championships
Dr Lam Tai-fai SBS JP, Chairman of the HKSI, congratulated Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey on winning the second gold medal at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in three days, making history for Hong Kong for being the first Hong Kong athlete to win two gold medals at a single world swimming championships (25m). This remarkable achievement demonstrated her perseverance and spirit of striving hard which made Hong Kong people proud.
Dr Lam commended the spirit of continual progress of Haughey, saying, “After winning two silver medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Haughey was never complacent and kept enhancing her capability. She showed her prowess in winning the world championships again after achieving a record breaking result in the women’s 200m freestyle event. Her continuously impressive performance is historic for Hong Kong, boosting the morale of local elite sports development.”
Promoted as the world champion two days ago, Haughey fought for the gold medal in the women’s 100m freestyle event at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She finished first in 51.97 seconds in the heat and clocked second-fastest in 51.82 seconds in the semi-finals for qualifying for the finals. Haughey finally broke the championship record and clinched the champion in 50.98 seconds, bringing the second world swimming championships gold medal for Hong Kong.
In addition, Dr Lam congratulated Hong Kong badminton mixed doubles pair Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet on winning a bronze medal for Hong Kong at the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain. Although they lost 1:2 to the second-seed mixed doubles pair from Thailand in the semi-finals, a bronze medal was won for Hong Kong without playoff.
