With the conclusion of the 13-day 14th National Games today, Dr Lam Tai-fai SBS JP, Chairman of the HKSI, congratulated the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Delegation on attaining seven medals, including 2 golds and 5 bronzes at the National Games held in Shaanxi Province, and continuing to achieve good results at Major Games.
Dr Lam highly praised all athletes for their strong morale and remarkable performance at the National Games. Dr Lam said, “I would like to express my appreciation to the HKSAR Delegation for their tireless efforts at the Games. The 15th National Games to be held in 2025 will be co-hosted by Guangdong Province - Hong Kong - Macau, it is hoped that the HKSAR Government and members of the public will continue their support for the sports development in Hong Kong and make every effort to promote sports in the community, to support elite sports, and to develop Hong Kong into a prime destination for hosting major international sports events. We hope that Hong Kong athletes will achieve even better results in the next National Games where they will play on home soil and keep shining in the international sports arena.”
Despite this year’s National Games kicked off on 15 September, the Hong Kong cycling team had already attained good results before the opening ceremony. Leung Ka-yu took bronze in the men's omnium event on 12 September, winning the first medal for Hong Kong at this year’s National Games, while Lee Wai-sze won a gold and bronze medal on 13 and 14 September respectively. In the women’s sprint event, Lee Wai-sze defeated her rival Zhong Tian-shi by 2-0 to clinch the first gold medal for Hong Kong, and she won a bronze medal in women's keirin event the following day.
Karatedo athlete Lau Chi-ming won a bronze medal in the men's individual kata event on 18 September. Hong Kong fencing team also brought home with 2 bronze medals, the first one was from men’s foil team, fencers including Cheung Siu-lun, Choi Chun-yin and Yeung Chi-ka defeated Jiangsu, the silver winner at last National Games, in the bronze medal match, while Kong Man-wai defeated Sun Yi-wen, the Tokyo Olympic gold medallist, to capture the women’s epee individual bronze.
More good news came on the final day of the HKSAR Delegation at the National Games, with 20-year-old cyclist Lee Sze-wing grabbing Hong Kong’s second gold medal. She finished the 121 kilometres race in 3 hours, 4 minutes and 42 seconds under heavy rain in the women’s individual road race and made history of being the first Hong Kong female cyclist to win the individual road race at the Games.
It is commendable for HKSAR Delegation who could still win seven medals after carrying out 21-day quarantine before the competitions.
