Representatives of the five institutes in the Signing Ceremony include Professor Tian Ye, Director of the China Institute of Sport Science (CISS); Nie Shimin, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Sports Medicine (NISM); Professor Chi Jian, Deputy Principal of the Beijing Sport University (BSU); Professor Sun Yiliang, Principal of the Wuhan Institute of Physical Education (WIPE); and Professor Chen Wei, Principal of the Chengdu Sport University (CDSU), each of whom signed an agreement with Dr Trisha Leahy, Chief Executive of the HKSI separately. The Signing Ceremony is officiated and witnessed by Zhang Tianbai, Deputy Director of the Science and Education Department, General Administration of Sport of China; Li Daizheng, Deputy Director of the Competition and Training Department, General Administration of Sport of China; Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs; Pang Chung, Hon Secretary General of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC); and Tang Kwai-nang, Vice-Chairman of the HKSI. Tang Kwai-nang said, “Cooperation between the HKSI and the Mainland sports institutes has been developing since different times. Today the cooperation between the China sports institutes and the HKSI represents a milestone development allowing us to facilitate a more coordinated, and systematic exchange in the key elite training support areas of sports science and medicine.” “Building on existing partnerships, the HKSI will continue to strengthen works with the five sports institutions in various fields and further develop our cooperation with different institutes of other provinces and cities, in order to continuously improve elite training systems in Hong Kong and ensure athletes are optimally prepared for, and achieve outstanding results, at the coming Major Games including the Hong Kong East Asian Games, the Guangzhou Asian Games and the London Olympic Games,” he added. Dr Trisha Leahy emphasised the importance of the collaboration to HKSI’s elite training support as well as the elite sport development in Hong Kong. “The five sports institutes have achieved significant outcomes as evidenced by China’s Olympic winning results. These achievements can be attributed to their strengths in different sports training support disciplines. For instances, the CISS is strong in sports psychology and sports biomechanics, the NISM in sports nutrition and sports medicine, the BSU in education and research, the WIPE in scientific research on aquatic sports and sports psychology, and CDSU in sports medicine and national traditional sports, just to name a few. Local elite athletes will greatly benefit from these partnerships and Hong Kong’s competition level in the international sporting arena will also be raised in the long run,” she elaborated. In the upcoming four years, the HKSI will strengthen the collaboration with these five China sports institutes. Our priority tasks will include arranging visits and exchanges of sports science specialists, upgrading athletes’ physical test and training monitoring methodology, setting up a mechanism of medical diagnosis and sport rehabilitation for local athletes in the Mainland, selecting qualified Chinese manual therapists to provide services in Hong Kong, solving training problems through joint research efforts, and exploring the educational support possibility of local athletes in the Mainland.
