The Chairman of the HKSI Mr Tang King-shing GBS PDSM announced today that, following a very competitive international search assisted by an Executive Search agency and the scrutiny and recommendation by a dedicated Recruitment Panel, the HKSI Board of Directors officially appointed Mr Tony Choi MH the position of the Chief Executive of the HKSI with effect from 1 January 2024.
Mr Choi is a well-known and respected figure in elite sport circles. With almost 25 years of experience at the HKSI, Mr Choi was an elite athlete, a coach, and ultimately, Head Coach of the highly successful elite Squash programme which swept the boards winning all 7 gold, and 5 of the silver medals available at the 2009 East Asian Games. He was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Government in 2010.
He joined the HKSI executive leadership team as Deputy Chief Executive in 2016, and has since continued to contribute to the HKSI’s overall development with his well-proven elite sport expertise, leadership and management ability.
Mr Tang commended Mr Choi for his passion, dedication, and expertise in the development of elite sports and was the ideal candidate to lead the HKSI forward to face the challenges ahead. He expressed confidence that the deep collaborative engagement between Mr Choi and the HKSI’s stakeholders, including the Government, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, the National Sports Associations, Mainland and international counterparts, would help promote the HKSI and all the athletes under its training programmes to continue to shine in the international sports arena.
Mr Choi expressed, “I am honoured to be appointed as the HKSI Chief Executive. This is a very exciting period for the local elite sport sector when we all are looking forward to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the 15th National Games to be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao authorities in 2025. With ongoing support from the Government, the HKSI, our stakeholders and the community, I believe elite sports development will go from strength to strength, and athletes will continue to succeed in the international sporting arena bringing honour to Hong Kong.”
The HKSI is the organisation responsible for training elite athletes on behalf of the Government. Its mission is to provide an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arena. In addition to sports facilities, the HKSI's comprehensive support for athletes includes elite coaching and training, sports science, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, athlete affairs and education, as well as sports research information.
