Organised by the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI), the Sports for Hope Foundation (SFHF) Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards (OJAA) presentation ceremony for the 3rd quarter of 2015 took place at the HKSI today. Twenty-four junior athletes were awarded in recognition of their remarkable achievements in this quarter.
Officiating guests included Dr Trisha Leahy BBS, Chief Executive of the HKSI; Mr Pui Kwan-kay BBS MH, Vice-President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC); Mr Chu Hoi-kun, Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Press Association; and Miss Marie-Christine Lee, founder of the SFHF.
The recipients were Robbie James Capito and Lo Ho-sum (billiard sports), Keung Nok-kan and Areta Lee (fencing), the Hong Kong youth (U19) korfball team, Chan Man-fung (roller sports), Chan Chi-fung (rowing), Chan Wui-ki and Choi Uen-shan (squash), Lee Ka-yee, Leung Ka-wan and Ng Ka-man (table tennis), Ma Kwan-ching (windsurfing), Lau Chi-lung and Sham Hui-yu (wushu), and Leung Chung-yan and Wong Pui-kei (table tennis – Hong Kong Sports Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability).
After securing a fifth place in the RS:X women event at the RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships held in Poland, young windsurfer Ma Kwan-ching was awarded her second OJAA title. Ma has been connected with the sailboards when she was only seven. Inspired by her parents, she dedicated most of her times in the sea and what she gained from the sport was sheer joy. “Unlike some other sports, when you get on the board, you are all alone with the nature. No one can stand beside you and give you instructions. You are taking charge of the whole journey and it is your experience that tells you what you need to do in every step.” Ma turned into a full-time athlete this year after taking the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination as she found the satisfaction attained from playing the sports was irreplaceable. “I want to pursue my dream when I am still young. I don’t want to leave any regrets in my life.” She added.
Fencers Keung Nok-Kan and Areta Lee were thrilled to receive their first OJAA award. Partnering with other teammates in the women’s team foil event at the 2015 Asian Under-23 Fencing Championship held in Mongolia, they defeated Macau and marched to the semi-final, where they again won by 45:28 over Japan and bagged a silver medal home. Keung said, “I am very honoured to receive the award. Tremendous thanks to the Sports for Hope Foundation for the sponsorship as well as the recognition from the HKSI and the Hong Kong Fencing Association. All these encourage us to believe in ourselves, train harder and do better in coming competitions.” Talking about her future plans, she hopes to participate in more international tournaments, and increase training hours to improve her fitness and technique.
Third-time awardee roller skater Chan Man-fung impressed the judges again by winning a gold medal in the junior men speed slalom event at the Paris Slalom World Cup 2015 and a bronze in the same event at the 5th China National Roller Freestyle Skating Championships. He also expressed his gratitude to the support and appreciation from the Foundation, and he would share the joy with his family and teammates.
In addition, Chan Pui-kei (athletics), Chak Ngo-pong and Wat Nga-man (dancesport), Wong Jun-ying and Hilda Yeung (gymnastics), Ma Pak-hong (roller sports), Lam Ching (tennis) and Cheng Ho-yin (windsurfing) were awarded Certificate of Merit for this quarter.
Organised by the HKSI and sponsored by the Sports for Hope Foundation since 2012, with support from the SF&OC and the HKSPA, the OJAA recognises the achievements of outstanding local junior athletes under the age of 19 on a quarterly basis. Each recipient is presented with a cash prize of HK$2,500, a sports voucher worth HK$2,500 and a certificate.
The HKSI is the Government’s elite sport training systems delivery agent and is committed to providing an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured, and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arena, and to inspiring potential athletes to pursue a full-time sports career.
