Trunk conditioning and performance
By Dr. Alison McManus & Mr. Michael Tse
Over the past decade, core strength and core endurance have been "buzzwords" in the sport and fitness industries. Despite an apparent lack of research investigating the effects of core strength/endurance on sports performance, comments such as: "increasing core/trunk conditioning can lead to a greater capacity for speed generation, improve agility, improve balance and posture, and decrease risk of injury" are common. This lecture provides an overview of our latest research and addresses questions related to how to measure core endurance, whether core endurance can be trained, and if a training effect is possible, whether this leads to improvement in performance.
