Scientific support to elite sport - a multi-disciplinary, biopsychosocial paradigm
By Dr. Trisha Leahy and Mr. Raymond So
In the world of high performance sport, it has become increasingly clear that individual success at the elite level is a function of the complex interplay of multiple factors. Apart from individual talent, and expert coaching to facilitate that talent, achieving and maintaining "an edge" over competitors requires a comprehensive support infrastructure to minimize risk and maximize results. An effective support infrastructure is underpinned by a biopsychosocial paradigm. The term biopsychosocial is used to refer to the interaction between biological, psychological and social factors, which are inextricably intertwined in the overall development of any individual. The new ASSD handbook, which illustrates the biopsychosocial working model of the ASSD, will be launched during the presentation. Five characteristics of an integrated support system for elite performance, which form the basis for best practice at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, will be introduced.
