Preventing Burnout in Elite Athletes: Research Evidence and Suggestions for Coaches and Other Sport Practitioners
By Dr. Chris Lonsdale
For some athletes, sport is a positive experience, for others it may be far less fulfilling as they struggle to find the desire and energy to continue. In this talk, the speaker will discuss athlete burnout from a sport psychology perspective and present evidence from three recent studies involving over 600 elite and junior athletes from Canada and New Zealand. The presentation will focus on how this evidence might help athletes, coaches, and administrators to structure training and competition in ways that will prevent burnout and help athletes to become more engaged in their sport.
