Emotion regulation in sports
By Dr. Lee Hing Chu
Emotion plays an important role in sport performance. For many athletes, competitive sport is an emotional experience. Emotion is defined as a feeling (as opposed to thoughts), such as happiness, love, anxiety, fear and anger, in reaction to a situation, following cognitive appraisal of the situation, and can result in physiological changes and affect behavior. Arousal and anxiety, two separate but related things, are commonly experienced in competitions. The presentation will explain how emotion affects sport performance in terms of motivation and coping effectiveness. It will also introduce methods used to regulate emotions in sports which include cognitive and arousal control methods.
