Director, Sports Medicine
The Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited (“HKSI”) is the Government’s delivery agent to provide the high performance training system for eligible sports. The HKSI’s mission is to provide an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arena benchmarked at Major Games results. We are now inviting suitable candidates for the following vacancy:
THE JOB
Reporting to the Chief Executive of HKSI, the Director, Sports Medicine will be responsible for the following duties:
- Operations and Strategic Planning: The Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sports Medicine Centre, Sports Psychology Centre, and Sports Nutrition Monitoring Centre. This includes managing resources, setting strategic goals, and ensuring effective coordination among the different centres;
- Leadership and Guidance: The Director provides leadership and guidance to the medical team, which may include physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals. They ensure that the team delivers high-quality healthcare services to the athletes and supports their overall well-being;
- Medical Policies and Procedures: The Director develops and enforces medical policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures. These are based on evidence-based national and international guidelines to ensure the best practices in sports medicine and athlete care;
- Licensing Responsibility: As the licensee of the Hong Kong Sports Institute Clinic, the Director ensures compliance with relevant regulations, such as the Cap. 343 Medical Clinics Ordinance and Cap. 633 Private Healthcare Facilities Ordinance. They oversee the clinic’s operations, maintain appropriate licensing, and ensure adherence to quality standards;
- Collaboration and Liaison: The Director works closely with the centres of Elite Training Science & Technology Division to enhance of athlete’s holistic care. They collaborate with other organizations, including the government, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the National Sports Associations, and the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, to foster partnerships and promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise;
- Performance Oversight: The Director monitors and reports to the Board and its relevant Committees on divisional performance outcomes in line with the HKSIL's strategic direction and key performance indicators;
- Representation: The Director represents the HKSI in relevant medical and sports-related conferences, workshops, and meetings. This includes staying updated on the latest advancements in sports medicine, sharing knowledge and experiences, and networking with professionals in the field; and
- Assistance and Administrative Projects: The Director provides assistance to the Chief Executive of HKSI and performs administrative projects as assigned. This may involve contributing to strategic initiatives, participating in organizational planning, and supporting the overall development and success of the institution.
THE REQUIREMENTS
- Fully registered with a recognised professional body in a health-related field in Hong Kong SAR (e.g., medical doctor, nurse, physiotherapist and other health disciplines);
- Candidates should have at least 15 years of working experience in medical field, indicating a strong foundation in medical practice;
- A postgraduate level qualification within the disciplines of sports medicine, sports performance or a relevant field is preferred;
- Executive experience working with elite athletes, coaches, sports-related scientists, and healthcare professionals is preferred. This familiarity with the sports environment helps in understanding the unique needs and challenges of high-performance athletes;
- Multisport working experience with elite athletes, coaches and technical staff from both team and individual sports in high-performance environments is preferred;
- Experience in providing medical support for Major Games is preferred, as it demonstrates an understanding of the demands and complexities of elite-level competitions;
- Excellent command of both spoken and written English and Chinese is essential, as effective communication with athletes, colleagues and stakeholders is crucial;
- Fluency in Putonghua is preferred, as it facilitates communication and collaboration with individuals and organizations from mainland China; and
- Knowledge of Child Protection in sport and equal opportunity issues in the context of Hong Kong is preferred, highlighting the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for athletes.
