Six medals for Hong Kong's Paralympic stars at Rio
|
Hong Kong athletes enjoyed a successful Paralympics which was held on 7 - 18 September, returning from Rio with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
Leung Yuk-wing (boccia, mixed individual BC4) and Tang Wai-lok (swimming, men's 200m freestyle S14) took the golds.
Tang's stunning win in the Olympics Aquatics Stadium was a new Games record as he touched in one minute 56.32 seconds. The 19-year-old was just a fraction off the world record (1:56.27) and just missed out on another medal when he was fourth in 100m backstroke.
"I am so happy to have won the gold medal," said Tang, who was sixth in the 200m at the London Paralympics. "This is not only my personal best but also a Games record. I have never thought of it."
His achievements saw him fly the flag for Hong Kong at the closing ceremony.
In boccia, veteran Leung returned to the top of the podium after winning an individual gold in Athens 2004, beating Samuel Andrejcik of Slovakia 4-3 in a close final.
Leung won gold in Athens 2004 and silver in Beijing four years later.
"I feel very happy to get a gold this time," said Leung. "I did not win anything at the London 2012 Games and so I had to review my performance and worked hard again."
"Two years later I got two golds in the world championships and now I have made it again in the Rio Paralympics."
"I am so happy. The final was not easy as I was trailing two points in the first game, but fortunately I was able to get back to the table point by point."
There were three medals for the wheelchair fencers, Yu Chui-yee with silver in the women's individual foil category A and Chan Yui-chong with bronze in the women's epee category B.
Chan and Yu also helped the epee team take silver with Justine Charissa Ng. The trio missed out on gold after China beat them 45-35 in the final but improved on the bronze they won in London.
Yu had 9 medals under her belt before Rio and had been unbeaten in the foil since Athens. But Rong Jing of China was too strong in the final this time, beating her 15-8. She said,"I have tried my best in every match. My hard work and effort still paid off though being the runner-up. Thank you for all your support to the Hong Kong team."
Hong Kong's other medal was won by Ng Mui-wui in table tennis as she reached the semi-finals of the women's singles - Class 11.

Impressive results for senior and junior wushu athletes |
Hong Kong's wushu athletes were in action at two major competitions in September, and took seven golds amid an impressive 24-medal total.
First up was the 9th Asian Wushu Championships in Chinese Taipei, where Chen Suijin (women's taijiquan), Hui Tak-yan (men's taijiquan) and Liu Xuxu (women's gunshu) all stood atop the podium.
Chen added two more medals, silver in the taijijian and bronze with Zhuang Jiahong in the double taijiquan. Zhuang also won bronze in the individual men's taijiquan, and Liu added a bronze in women's changquan.
The other silvers were won by Leung Cheuk-hei (men's nangun) and Yuen Ka-ying (women's nandao).
It was then the turn of the next generation to impress, at the 6th World Junior Wushu Championships in Bulgaria. The team took 15 medals in total, 4 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze.
Jada Nicole He (girl's gunshu C), Lau Chi-lung (boy's nandao A), Leung Yat-sing (boy's 42 forms taijijian B) and Michelle Yeung (girl's daoshu B) took the golds. Lau, Leung and Yeung were also among the Hong Kong athletes who were edged into silvers in other events.

Globetrotting squash players win 16 medals |
Hong Kong squash players enjoyed a host of good results at several competitions around the world in September.
Four golds were won amid a total of 16 medals at junior and senior level events.
First up were the World University Squash Championships in Kuala Lumpur, where Yip Tsz-fung won the men's individual title and Tong Tsz-wing was runner-up in the women's. Silver in the mixed team and bronze in the men's individual also went to Hong Kong.
Later in the month Yip took bronze at the COAS International Squash Championship in Islamabad and Tong won the women's title at the China Challenge Cup in Beijing.
At the Macau Open, there were runners-up medals in both men's and women's singles for Lee Ho-yin and Au Wing-chi.
Next up were the 23rd Asian Junior Championships, also in Kuala Lumpur, where Lui Hiu-lam's victory in the girl's under-17 event was the highlight of a five-medal Hong Kong total.
And Au capped an impressive month with victory in the women's singles at the Otters International JSW ISC in Mumbai.

Tenpin bowler Mak delights home fans at Asian Championships |
Mak Cheuk-yin starred in front of his home fans at the 24th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships held on 18 - 28 September in Hong Kong as the home team won six medals, three of them gold.
Mak won the all events title and teamed up with Wu Siu-hong for doubles gold too. With Lau Kwun-ho, they also lifted the men's trios trophy.
Mak was also second in the masters and third in the singles, with Wu third in the all events.
The three golds made it a record-breaking performance for Hong Kong at the prestigious tournament.
A total of 135 men and 65 women competed at the event at the SCAA Bowling Centre.

Wong highlights impressive month for table tennis |
There were nine medals for Hong Kong's table tennis players, who were in action at the China Open in Chengdu and the Asian Junior & Cadet Championships in Bangkok.
Veteran Wong Chun-ting reached the semis in Chengdu, but was beaten in a tight clash by world no.2 Fan Zhendong, who went on to lift the title. Ho Kwan-kit was winner of the men's under-21 title, beating Yuto Muramatsu of Japan in three games in the final. Wong and Ho teamed up for bronze in the doubles, while Doo Hoi-kem was beaten in the final of the women's U21.
At the junior event, Mak Tze-wing and Soo Wai-yam teamed up to win the junior doubles title. Soo was also a semi-finalist in the singles and the team with Mak and Liu Qi. The junior boys' team and cadet girls' team also won bronzes.

Wu Siu-hong crowned the title of Outstanding Young Persons |
Tenpin bowler Wu Siu-hong was one of the five local awardees of the prestigious "JCI Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award 2016" for his achievement and inspiration to the community.
Organised by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection debuted in 1970 to give formal recognition to young people with outstanding achievement in their career and community services. Many elite athletes were granted the honour over the past decades.

Lincoln High School visits HKSI |
A group of 120 students and teachers from Lincoln High School, Washington DC of USA visited the HKSI for a cultural exchange on
8 October. This exchange programme was initiated by President Xi Jinping's invitation to Lincoln High School students, during his first US visit in September 2015. The School underwent an 11-day expedition in China and the visit to the HKSI forms a part of their 3-day itinerary in Hong Kong.

A 6-member delegation led by Mr Zhang Min, Chief of General Affairs Office of the Nanjing Sport Institute visited the HKSI on 26 - 30 September. During the 5-day visit, the delegation was introduced to the range of services and training facilities provided at the HKSI, and had a good exchange of experience in the development and management of elite sport facilities.
