Hong Kong team wins 12 medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games

Congratulations to the Hong Kong team on winning 3 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games held on 29 August - 9 September in London, UK.
A total of 28 athletes represented Hong Kong in 7 sports at the Games, including athletics, boccia, equestrian, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and wheelchair fencing.

International Scientific Symposium 2013 - Emerging technologies for sports performance enhancement
|
The annual International Scientific Symposium organised by the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) will be held on 15 - 16 March 2013 (Friday and Saturday) in Hong Kong. The symposium theme is ¡§Emerging technologies for sports performance enhancement¡¨. The objective of the symposium is to bring together coaches, physical education teachers, athletes, researchers in the field of sports science and sports medicine, and sport administrators to exchange ideas and stimulate discussion on the development and application of technologies in enhancing sports performance.

Wong Wing-ki named ¡§Men of 2012¡¨ by JMEN magazine

Badminton player Wong Wing-ki was named ¡§Men of 2012¡¨ by JMEN, a men¡¦s lifestyle magazine, at a presentation ceremony held on 4 September. The event, now in its third year, selects 10 male iconic figures of the year annually in recognition of their contribution in their respective fields over the year. Wong is the third athlete after table tennis player Li Ching and retired windsurfer Chan King-yin to receive the award. |

Local athletes promote Sport For All Day
|
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department organised ¡§Sport For All Day 2012¡¨ on 5 August. Apart from a series of recreation and sports programmes, a launch ceremony was held at the Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre on the day, where table tennis duo Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching, squash player Au Wing-chi, rower Lau Ching-man and artistic cyclist Yu Pok-man were invited to disseminate messages on the benefits and importance of sport and other physical activities, and called on the public to regularly participate in the activities. Table tennis athletes Chiu Chung-hei and Soo Wai-yam were also invited to stage a sport demonstation at the Tai Po Sports Centre, as well as to share their experience as an elite athlete with the audience. |

Yu Chui-yee shares life story at Sun Life Financial agency meeting

The inpiring story of wheelchair fencer Yu Chui-yee, fully demonstrates the never-give-up spirit of Hong Kong people. Sun Life Financial invited Yu to speak at its agency meeting on 6 August, where she shared her life story with around 1,400 agents, and encouraged them to stay strong in the face of difficulties. |

Riding on the popularity of sports this summer, TISSOT organised a watch launch event on 13 August with the theme of style and sports. Long distance runners Chan Ka-ho and Yiu Kit-ching were invited to attend the launch ceremony, where they took part in a series of games with the other guests, and showcased a series of TISSOT watches. |

Wong Kam-po shares life experience at Dah Sing Life ceremony

Cyclist Wong Kam-po has been an inspirational model for the Hong Kong spirit over the years. As one of Dah Sing Life¡¦s spokespersons, Wong was invited to attend a graduation and certificate presentation ceremony on 27 August for Dah Sing Life staff and employees who have completed a professional certification programme in financial consulting. During the ceremony, Wong shared with the graduates and guests his extensive experience at Major Games, and encouraged Hong Kong people to always try their best as they work towards their goals. |

Olympian City cheers for Lee Wai-sze

A celebration party, organised by the Olympian City of the Sino Group, was held for cyclist Lee Wai-sze on 28 August, where she shared the excitement about of her sporting success with the public up close and personal, and encouraged students to relieve stress by exercising in their transition to secondary schools, and face the challenges ahead in a positive way. Music group Fama and retired cyclist Ho Siu-lun also showed their support for Lee, encouraging her to continue to work hard and reach new heights.

She emphasises that leaving an athletic career can be a positive experience if athletes are well prepared and equipped with the necessary skills. This book is suitable for both amateur and professional athletes. |

Performance nutrition for team sports

This book is written by a nationally recognised sports nutritionist from the United States, and it illustrates the specific nutritional needs by the type of sports and the associated trainings. Contents are divided into three parts. The first part gives an overview of nutrition policy for good health and optimal exercise, training and competition and a general guideline on food choices for all ages. Part two addresses how to assess nutritional needs based upon particular sports and performance goals and explains how nutrition is related in developing muscle and power in order to maintain an optimal body composition and endurance for athletes. Last part is the sport-specific nutrition guidelines of some major team sports in America. This book serves as a good reference for dietitians, food service managers, coaches, parents, caretakers who take part in meal planning for the athletes in all ages. |
