Sports massage therapy

Hong Kong Sports Institute: Roy Chan, Sports Massage Therapist

Sports Massage is a technical massage specially catering for athletes and sports enthusiasts mainly to control soft tissues, which include the skin, muscle, tendons, ligament and muscle membranes. This type of massage can also be described as specially designed for the imbalanced development of muscle membrane, sports trauma and harsh exercise regimes.

From Asia to the world

Sports Massage originated in Asia. Over 3,000 years ago, this massage technique was found in China, India and Greece. However, it was not until 1776 to 1839 that it slowly spread to the West. The founder of the Swedish Massage, Per Henrik Ling, developed a new theory and technique of massage through treating injured fencers and gymnasts, gradually making Sports Massage accepted by world-class athletes, then being internationally recognised. At present, Sports Massage has a place in national sports teams of various countries, such as the USA, Canada and Australia.

Techniques for different situations

There are six major types of Sports Massage technique to suit the different needs of athletes:

1. Pre-exercise
Exercise is generally divided into ¡§Training Phase¡¨ and ¡§Competition Phase¡¨. The type of massage given to the athletes before these two phases is called ¡§Pre-exercise Sports Massage¡¨. It can stimulate the athlete¡¦s nerves, muscles, circulation for the joints and the body, as well as the mental state. This treatment is highly valuable in helping athletes prepare for any form of exercise.

2. Pre-training
This type of massage is usually used to enhance athletes¡¦ efficiency for the training, with its focus on aiding their physical development and preparing their body for competition. Pre-training Sports Massage has to take into account the type of sport, as well as the athlete¡¦s own physical condition.

3. Pre-event
Pre-event Sports Massage is very common in the West and it often lasts for 15 to 20 minutes per session. It focuses on preparing an athlete for competition, and helps stimulate blood circulation of the athletes. It also has muscle toning effects, such as warming up the major muscles and calming down the muscle tension, and improve the joint flexibility, aiming to help athletes reach its maximum potential.

4. Intra-event
Intra-event Sports Massage is given to athletes between competitions or on the day of the competition to help them recover their physical state swiftly. The time needed for this type of massage is short and the idea is to focus on muscles that may have been stressed during the competition.

5. Post-event / Rehabilitation
After a session of intense training or competition, the nervous system, circulation, pulmonary system, digestive system, metabolism and also the lactic acid balance of the athletes may have significant changes. Those changes may result in muscle and tissue imbalance within the body. Under this situation, Sports Massage can help reduce or eliminate these problems, and quickly facilitate and enhance the athletes¡¦ capacity for the upcoming competitions.

6. Recovery
A full-body massage is often done once a week for no longer than 90 minutes as long duration of massage will overwork the muscles and exhaust the body. The best time to receive the massage is in the morning of the rest day, and the best way is to do it in a warm and quiet room after a warm bath. Such massage employs techniques that move along with blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which is able to aid in recovery and reduce any stress and discomfort.

Important role of massage therapists

Sports Massage techniques often come from the clinical knowledge of the therapists and are accumulated through practical experience. The understanding of the human anatomy and biomechanics of different sports are also very important. An added bonus would be the therapist being an exercise enthusiast and having regular exercise. Taking all these into account, these therapists are more aptly known as ¡§Sports Massage Therapists¡¨.
