22 HKSI Scholarship Athletes Honoured by the Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2008

Organised by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2008 Presentation Ceremony was held on 16 February 2009 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wanchai. Twenty-two athletes and one sports team received awards in seven categories. Athletics star So Wa-wai, who snatched one gold and one bronze medal for Hong Kong in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, clinched the most coveted ¡§Bank of China (Hong Kong) Best of Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award¡¨. The Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) gives the warmest congratulations to all the winning athletes, and hopes that they can achieve outstanding results for Hong Kong in this year¡¦s National Games and East Asian Games.

Three elite athletes promote Hong Kong Derby

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has been a keen supporter of sports development and, in recent years, actively invited athletes to promote its events. In February 2009, table tennis duo Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching as well as squash player Rebecca Chiu were invited to take part in a video-shooting session to promote the annual Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby.

Sports Excellence Volume 5 published

The latest issue of HKSI publication Sports Excellence was published on 26 February 2009 as a supplement of Ming Pao Daily, bringing news of local elite sports and the work of the HKSI to the public. HKSI New Year Luncheon

To celebrate the beginning of 2009, the HKSI hosted a New Year Luncheon on 12 February 2009 to get together with the officials of the government, sporting authorities as well as National Sports Associations (NSAs) of elite and disabled sports, to exchange ideas on sports development and share the latest news on the HKSI Redevelopment Project.
HKSI Chairman Dr Eric Li delivered the welcome speech. HKSI representatives shared the latest news on the HKSI Redevelopment Project with the attending guests.

New references at the Sports Information Centre (SIC)

The clinical orthopedic assessment guide (second edition)

Published by Human Kinetics in 2008 and written by Janice Loudon, Marcie Swift and Stephania Bell, the reference provides useful techniques for accurate diagnosis and treatment of patient injuries. The second edition includes 40 new functional tests, and a new section on adverse neurodynamics. Besides, the overall layout and photo quality have been improved to make the reference more user friendly; and size has been reduced to make it easier to carry. The text is an essential tool for clinical professionals, including physical therapists and athletic trainers.

 

Sports training: the complete guide

The book was published by Firefly Books in 2007 and written by John Shepherd. The author was a former elite athlete in the UK, a coach at Olympic level and a sports journalist. The text presents sports science theory in simple terms; discusses effective training methods and techniques; and shows how to design and implement training plans. It also covers sport psychology and training needs of younger and older athletes. It is a complete guidebook for all level of athletes and coaches who want to improve athletic performance and knowledge of sports training.
