Hong Kong athletes win 13 medals at the 4th East Asian Games

The Hong Kong delegation won 2 gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze medals at the 4th East Asian Games held on 29 November ¡V 6 October in Macau, China. A total of 231 athletes competed in 14 events this year. The Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) would like to congratulate all winning athletes.

Women's Table Tennis (intellectual disability) team wins 3 gold medals at the 4th INAS-FID World Table Tennis Championships

The Women's Table Tennis (intellectual disability) team won 3 gold medals at the 4th INAS-FID World Table Tennis Championships held in late October in Thouars, France.

The team won the medals in the women's singles, women's doubles and women's team events. These results matched their achievements at the previous 3rd INAS-FID World Table Tennis Championships held in 2003 in Mexico City, Mexico.

13th Hongkong Bank Foundation Elite Coaches Seminar/ Coaching Directors Forum

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Coaching Committee (HKCC) and the All-China Sports Federation, the annual Hongkong Bank Foundation Elite Coaches Seminar/ Coaching Directors Forum will be held on 2 ¡V 3 December at the HKSI. The seminar theme is "Quest for Excellence ¡V Olympic Gold Medal Coaches in the Spotlight". Olympic gold medal-winning coaches: Rene Appel, National Coach of the Hong Kong China Windsurfing Team; Glenn Beringen, Performance Development Coordinator of Swimming SA, Australia; Chen Zhong-he, Chief Coach of the China National Women¡¦s Volleyball Team; and Sun Hai-ping, Deputy Chief Coach of the China National Athletics Team, will share their experiences with local and overseas coaches. International Scientific Symposium ¡V The Emerging Science and Practice of Recovery

The HKSI is organising a two-day International Scientific Symposium on 24 - 25 February 2006.¡@The Symposium is supported by the International Federation of Sports Medicine, the CUHK-WHO Collaborating Centre for Sports Medicine and Health Promotion, and the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine & Sports Science.¡@The Symposium focuses on the planning and integration of systematic recovery programming, targeting the needs of athletes and coaches within the Asia-Pacific region.¡@Renowned speakers in the field have been invited to share their expertise through keynote presentations and an expert panel discussion.¡@This will be a valuable opportunity to share expertise and get the most up-to-date scientific knowledge from experts in the field.

Wheelchair fencing athlete Yu Chui-yee receives International Paralympic Committee Best Games Debut Award

Wheelchair fencing athlete Yu Chui-yee was given the Best Games Debut Award by the International Paralympic Committee, in recognition of her sporting achievement at the Paralympic Games held in 2004 in Athens. In her first appearance at the Games, Yu Chui-yee captured two gold medals in individual events and two gold medals in team events.

Yu Chui-yee started fencing in 2000 and became a HKSI Scholarship athlete in April 2002. She won two gold medals in individual events and two gold medals in team events at the Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games) held in 2002 in Busan, Korea; and one gold medal in individual events at the World Wheelchair Fencing Championships held in 2002 in Budapest, Hungary.

Sprinter (physical disability) So Wa-wai receives the 2005 Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award

Sprinter (physical disability) So Wa-wai was elected by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong as one of the 2005 Ten Outstanding Young Persons, in recognition of his sporting achievements and commitment to the community.

So Wa-wai became a HKSI Scholarship athlete in April 1997. After winning his first gold medal in the mens 4x100m event at the 1996 Paralympic Games held in Atlanta, he went on to win 4 gold medals in men¡¦s 100m, 200m and 400m events at the 2000 Paralympic Games held in Sydney and again at the 2004 Paralympic Games held in Athens. He is currently the holder of the 100m and 200m world record for the mentally handicapped.

EXCHANGE AND VISITS

JiangSu sports delegation visits HKSI

A seven-member sports delegation from JiangSu visited the HKSI on 1 November. Accompanied by a representative of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in HKSAR, the delegates represented the Huai An Sports Bureau, Lian Yun Gang Sports Bureau, Xu Zhou Sports Bureau, Chang Zhou Sports Bureau, Wu Xi Sports Bureau and the JiangSu Contract Bridge Management Centre.

The delegation exchanged views with the HKSI management on elite sports facility management and the elite sports system in Hong Kong. They toured the HKSI, including sports science laboratories, hostel and elite sports training facilities.

The Commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission visits HKSI

Attorney Ambrosio de Luna, the Commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission visited the HKSI on 5 November. He toured the sports facilities at the HKSI and exchanged views with the HKSI management on the operation and running of elite sports training facilities.


NEW REFERENCE AT THE SPORTS INFORMATION CENTRE (SIC)

Runner's world guide to injury prevention: how to identify problems, speed healing, and run pain-free

Written by Dagny S. Barrios and published by Rodale Inc. in 2004, this book is a comprehensive guide to running injuries prevention. It contains tips on choosing running shoes, stretching and strengthening muscles, and fluid intake. It discusses rehabilitation and recovery methods after injuries from both physiological and psychological aspects, and provides useful insights for runners of all ages and experience levels.
 

The high altitude medicine handbook

Written by Andrew J. Pollard and David R. Murdoch and published by Radcliffe Medical Press in 2004, this book provides detailed information on medical problems and their treatment at high altitudes. Topics covered include the difference between high altitude and mountain sickness, symptoms and signs of sickness, prevention and management of illness and injury on the mountains. Mountain climbers, doctors and medical staff will find it useful and easy to read.
