Ng Ka-long Makes History at Hong Kong Open
|
Ng Ka-long made history by becoming the first local man to win the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships in the tournament's 34-year history.
Ng, 22, beat India's Sameer Verma in the final 21-14, 10-21, 21-11 to send the 6,000 fans packed into the Hong Kong Coliseum into delight.
"I used to watch the Hong Kong Open when I was a little kid and dreamed of one day being part of it in the future," said Ng. "I am so happy it has come true as winning the Hong Kong Open is a big moment in my career."
"In fact, someone was joking to me before asking if I would like to win the All England or the home tournament. I had no hesitation in saying the Hong Kong Open because it would be in front of the home crowd, which is important to the sport here."
Ng had lost to Verma in the World and Asian Youth Championships before and admitted that played on his mind before he got on court and won revenge.
"After knowing we will meet again in the final, I feared it might be the same result," he said. "But once the match started, I didn't think too much about it. I wasn't even thinking about creating another milestone for Hong Kong badminton, I was simply focused on the game."
Ng, who reached the last 16 at the Rio Olympics, hopes the win is just the start as he looks to get better and better.
"Long term, I want to reach the world's top five and make regular appearances in the big tournaments and win them," he added.
Hu Yun reached the semis of men's singles, and there were bronze medals also for Cheung Ngan-yi in the women's singles and Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet in the mixed doubles.
Tang and Tse continued their good form into the following week's tournament, the Macau Open, where they reached the final and finished second place. Cheung also reached the semis of the women's singles in Macau, as did Lee Chun-hei and Chau Hoi-wah in the mixed doubles.

First Medal for Hong Kong Women at Squash Team Worlds |
Hong Kong took home the bronze medal with their best ever result at Women's World Team Squash Championships in France.
Au Wing-chi, Chan Ho-ling, Liu Tsz-ling and Tong Tsz-wing had a terrific win over Malaysia in the quarter-final, but England denied them a place in the final, with Au losing to Laura Massaro and Liu to Sarah-Jane Perry in the semis.
Among other medals obtained earlier in the month, Tong took silver at the Amman Open in Jordan and Chu Man-yee bronze; there were also semi-final spots for Au Chun-ming and Ho Tze-lok at events in Pakistan and Australia respectively.

Two Golds for Table Tennis Juniors |
Hong Kong won the junior girls' singles and team titles at the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open, among four medals for Hong Kong at the event.
Soo Wai-yam won her second title in 2016 by beating Japanese top seed Maki Shiomi in six games. "My target was to be the champion and I thought it was possible but it was difficult, because every match was different," said Soo. "Today was a very tiring day, very exhausting, because I played seven matches. It was a matter of spirit and self-determination."
And two days later Mak Tze-wing took centre stage as Hong Kong won the junior girls' team crown. She won all her matches as the team - also featuring Soo and Liu Qi - saw off top seed Japan in the final.
"We truly believed that we had a chance to beat Japan; everyone in our team has ability," said Mak. "Many of the best players from the world took part here, so we had a great chance to improve and learn from our mistakes as well. It was very useful."
Wong Chin-yau reached the final of the cadet girls' singles and Mak and Soo the semis of the junior girls' doubles.
Elsewhere, Doo Hoi-kem reached the final of the U21 women's singles at the Austrian Open, and teamed up with Lee Ho-ching to reach the semis of the women's doubles.
