Hong Kong Team dominates at INAS World Table Tennis Championships with 21 medals
|
Hong Kong starred at the INAS World Table Tennis Championships for athletes with intellectual disabilities, winning 21 medals at the event in the Czech Republic.
Rio 2016 Paralympics bronze medallist Ng Mui-wui played a key role in the team's success, contributing to 6 of the 7 golds that the team won in Hradec Králové.
She won the Singles titles in both the Junior Girls and Women's events, and teamed up for 3 Doubles golds with Wong Pui-kei in the Junior Girls' event, London 2012 gold medallist Wong Ka-man in the Women's event and Fan Ka-ho in the Junior Mixed event.
Young talent Ng also helped to ensure Hong Kong took home the Women's Team title with Wong Ka-man, Wong Pui-kei and Li Hiu-tung, while the other gold was won by Leung Chung-yan in the Junior Boys' Single.
"This is the most important competition of the year," said coach Chan Hui, "and the team has been preparing and devoting themselves to training for six months before it, enabling them to have this great result."
"Ng can be very satisfied with her result but her performance was not just measured in the number of medals - throughout the competition, we could see that her ability in dealing with difficulties has improved a lot."
Hong Kong won 7 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals in total, with all the aforementioned athletes plus Wan Wai-lok, Tsoi Ming-fai and Wan Kwok-ho contributing to the success across multiple events and age categories.
"Hong Kong has developed sports for persons with intellectual disability for more than 20 years, and with this historical background and systematic training, we can have training programmes tailor-made for them," said coach Chan. "All these factors contribute to the success of Hong Kong team today."
"The next target is the Indonesia 2018 Asian Para Games where we hope the team can win more medals."

Windsurfer Chan Hei-man surprises even herself with a gold in World Cup Series |
There were two superb medal performances from Hong Kong windsurfers in October, with Chan Hei-man Hayley Victoria winning an RS:X World Cup Series event in Japan, and young star Mak Cheuk-wing claiming a silver in the Junior Girls category at the Techno 293 World Championships in Spain.
Chan admitted she was surprised to take the title in Gamagori, as she had considered pulling out of the competition the day before because of a hip injury. The win is a timely boost as she targets the Asian Games next year, having won gold at the 2014 edition of the event.
"Having won the event, it has really boosted my confidence," said Chan.
"I am looking forward to more races and also the Asian Games next year, which will be tough."
Mak, who was crowned world champion at under-15 level last year, showed that was no fluke as the 14-year-old took a silver at Techno 293 World Championships, creating another impressive result for Hong Kong team.

Thrilling Superseries title for Shuttlers Tang and Tse at DANISA Denmark Open |
Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet won the Superseries title in the Mixed Doubles at the DANISA Denmark Open.
Tang and Tse competed against Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen from the mainland China in the final in Odense, and it was a dramatic back-and-forth battle.
With the score tied at one game all, the China pair looked set to seal the win, with four championship points in the deciding game. But the Hong Kong pair fought back to 20-20, saved another championship point when down 20-21, then took the victory.
"We are very excited," said Tang after collapsing to the ground in disbelief. "The win was unexpected because the opponents were very strong so we did not expect to win. We just kept trying and we felt that the audience encouraged us so we just kept fighting. "
Wong Wing-ki Vincent also claimed a bronze medal of the Men's Singles at the same event.
Meanwhile, at junior level, there were a gold and two bronzes for Hong Kong at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships in Myanmar. Ko Shing-hei and Yeung Pui-lam took the gold with victory in the U17 Mixed Doubles.
