11 medals at World Championships for Hong Kong's rising wushu team
|
Hong Kong's wushu team enjoyed a terrific month at both senior and junior level, with athletes starring at the 14th World Wushu Championships and the 9th Asian Junior Wushu Championships.
At the World Championships, Hong Kong finished third overall on the medal table, behind perennial champions China and Iran, with five gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
He Jianxin claimed two golds in women's nandao and nangun with one bronze in nanquan; Liu Xuxu was first, second and third in the women's daoshu, changquan and gunshu respectively; Chen Suijin took gold and silver in the women's taijijian and baguazhang; and Zheng Tianhui delivered a gold in women's shuangjian. Hui Tak-yan, with silver and bronze in men's taijiquan and taijijian, completed the impressive tally.
Head Wushu Coach Liu Tao credited to the effort of coaches and athletes. "Both senior and junior athletes performed well, maximising their ability in the competitions," he said.
"Athletes from different categories and of different age groups learnt a lot from the competition. Competing with international athletes, they still have to learn how to project their style in their respective events."
And Liu hopes the team is on course for medal success at the Asian Games next summer.
The sport sector has also been making concerted efforts to get more young athletes involved and widen the talent pool, and Head Coach Liu will therefore have been delighted with the results at the Asian Junior Championships.
The team returned from the event in South Korea with eight gold, eight silver and five bronze medals.
Michelle Yeung had a terrific quadruple-gold display, winning the girl's changquan B, daoshu B and gunshu B, and taking part in Hong Kong's group event win.
"I competed at a consistent level at this event and I hope I continue to improve and achieve more success for Hong Kong in the future."
Coach Liu added: "The overall ability of the junior team has improved, and thus we gained a breakthrough result this time. It started from the 2013 Asian Junior Wushu Championships, when we ranked second for gold medals behind China, and first for the number of medals gained in the last five years."
"We have been doing more promotion in schools, which has helped youngsters to find out more about wushu taolu and become keen on it."

Three medals for Hong Kong at Asian Rowing Championships |
Hong Kong's rowers put in some excellent performances at the Asian Rowing Championships, winning a gold and two silver medals.
Tang Chiu-mang and Leung Chun-shek took gold in the men's lightweight double sculls in a very tight contest with Uzbekistan and China, surging across the line with a late burst of power as less than a second separated the top three.
Lee Ka-man was second in the women's lightweight single and Law Hiu-fung & Wong Wai-kin battled hard for a silver in the men's pair.
"As expected in the year before an Asian Games, the standard of racing this year was quite high in many events," said Head Coach Chris Perry. "It is also a very important opportunity to see which events offer the best medal targets for our crews in 2018.
"We were of course very happy to take gold in the men's lightweight double, as we have a long history of success in this event and it will be the only lightweight boat class for men in Tokyo 2020."
