Snooker star Ng On-yee adds another world title to her collection |
Hong Kong's Ng On-yee continued her superb year as the recently-crowned world snooker champion added another global title to her name, the IBSF World 6-Reds & Team Snooker Championships, held from 7 to 15 August in Karachi, Pakistan.
Ng comfortably beat India's Vidya Pillai 5-1 in the best-of-nine-frames final. It was the second time she has lifted the 6 Reds trophy, having won the inaugural event in 2013.
In April this year the 24-year-old made history when she became the first Asian woman to win the women's world championship, ending the reign of seemingly unbeatable 10-time champion Reanne Evans from England.
“On-yee once again proved herself as one of the game's best players by adding the IBSF 6 Reds World Championships to the WLBSA World Championships she secured in April, “ said Wayne Griffiths, Head Billiard Sports Coach at the HKSI.
“We will use these great results as a springboard to deliver On-yee's longer-term goals of becoming the most successful ladies player and to make an impact on the men's tour. Our competition and training plan for her will be geared towards these goals. “
Ng has impressed in recent exhibition events against reigning men's world champion Stuart Bingham and China's former world number one Ding Junhui, taking a frame off both players.
England's Evans has already put her skills to the test on tour against the men, and Ng hopes to follow in her footsteps.
Fung Kwok-wai and Lee Chun-wai were defending their men's team title at the same venue, but could only finish third this time out.
“They made an impressive defence, but fell just short, “ added Coach Griffiths. However, a bronze medal to follow last year's gold shows their consistency at world-class level. They continue Hong Kong's impressive showing in team events where our team spirit plays an important part. “
Griffiths was also excited by the performance of some of his up-and-coming talents, who have picked up outstanding results this summer. Two youngsters even tested themselves against senior players in the Karachi team event.
“The icing on the cake in Pakistan was a result secured by two of our junior players. We sent Leong Man-hoi and Nansen Wan Sin-man [both 19] for competition experience in a senior world championships. They took up this challenge and played above themselves in managing to secure a hugely impressive senior result.
“For Hoi and Nansen to achieve fifth place as juniors at a senior world championships proves that our junior programme is in good health and ready to provide Hong Kong champions for the next generation.“ Leong and Wan were beaten by eventual finalists from Pakistan. Griffiths said they are not the only exciting young talents coming through.
“Indeed, the winner of the Senior Hong Kong Snooker Open Championships in September was 15-year-old Tam Yun-fung, “ he said.
“The present is very bright - but the future is bright also and this is very satisfying for myself and our coaching team at the HKSI. The focus now will be on preparation to build on these great results in the IBSF World Snooker Championships in Egypt and the World Pool Junior Championships in China [both in November]. “

Hong Kong dominates Asian Under-20 Rugby Sevens Championship again
|
Hong Kong's boys under-20 rugby players retained their Asian title by repeating last year's feat of winning every game in both legs of the Asian Rugby Under 20 Sevens Series Hong Kong 2015.
Hong Kong swept the board in Johor, Malaysia on 15 -16 August, then did the same a week later on home soil to be crowned overall champions again.
“It feels amazing,“ said captain Richard Lewis. “The boys performed really well and we¡¦re happy with our performance. We really feel that we deserved to be Asian champions again.“
Hong Kong hammered Malaysia in the home final, 52-7, after dishing out heavy defeats to UAE and China in the quarter- and semi-finals.
Captain Lewis and several teammates will now step up to senior level and try to make the grade there.
“After back-to-back championships I think we have left the programme in good shape ¡V and in good hands,“ Lewis said.
Gareth Baber, Head Rugby Coach at the HKSI, added, “This is the purpose of these tournaments, for us to see how these players perform at the Asian level. And there are a few in these squads who with a little bit of development and coaching will be getting into a position to compete with the seniors.“
