Athletics team wins 3 medals at the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships
|
Hong Kong's Athletics team enjoyed a successful trip to the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneshwar, India from 6 to 9 July, returning with three medals in a confidence-boosting display ahead of major events this year as well as next year's Asian Games.
Rio Olympian Chan Ming-tai won silver in the long jump, while Yeung Man-wai was also the 1st runner-up in the high jump.
The 4x100m relay team of Ng Ka-fung, So Chun-hong, Tang Yik-chun, Tsui Chi-ho and Wan Hin-chung won bronze, making it four consecutive medals at the Asian Championships in a row at which the team has medalled.
Hong Kong long-jump record-holder Chan Ming-tai reached 8.03m in his final, achieving the best personal record this year.
Chan twice broke the eight-metre mark in the final, a timely boost ahead of World University Games and China National Games.
"It is highly significant and shows the efforts of myself and my coaches have not been going to waste," said 22-year-old Chan, who has been adjusting his technique.
He said the Asian Championships medal would "greatly enhance" his confidence. "Hopefully through practice I can more consistently break eight metres, and that will mean more medals."
Hong Kong's high-jump medal was won by Yeung, 22, who is enjoying an excellent season after smashing her own local record with 1.88m in May.
She felt she could have equalled that mark in India, and was a little disappointed not to have won the gold as she failed to match the 1.84m set by Uzbekistan's Nadiya Dusanova - but the event was still a major learning experience.
"The performance was fairly satisfactory," said Yeung, whose event was held in a torrential downpour that saw it suspended for half an hour. "But in practice the day before I felt I could do a personal best and in fact I believe I can do better."
The relay team ran 39.53 seconds to earn a fourth consecutive medal at the Asian Championships and local 100m record holder Tsui Chi-ho said this one had been much more difficult than the previous three.
"We have not had many relay events and the team's form has not been great," he admitted, "so to get a bronze we have to be very satisfied."
Wan Hin-chung and So Chun-hong added that the atmosphere at the championships would stand them in good stead for the future, helping them cope with the nerves of competing in major events.
