Shek warms up for World Championships with Asian gold and silver
|
Shek Wai-hung warmed up for gymnastics' upcoming World Championships with an impressive display at the 6th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships held in Hiroshima, Japan from 31 July to 2 August, winning a gold and silver medal.
Shek, who beat the reigning world champion to win Asian Games gold in the vault last September, triumphed again in the same event and took second place in the horizontal bar.
The 23-year-old's triumph was all the more impressive as he was fighting a shoulder injury suffered before the championships.
He recorded 15.162 points in the vault to beat Japanese teenager Kenzo Shirai, while Japan has sent a very strong team to the competition.
Shek finished second on the horizontal bar behind Japan's Yusuke Tanaka, 14.500 points to 15.550.
"He fully showed his strength in the vault,“ said Poon King-hung, Head Gymnastics Coach at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI).
“I believe the Incheon Asian Games medal greatly boosted his confidence, and overall he has become more technically proficient and his stability is so enhanced.
“Also, a special training camp to Japan to make adjustments, adapt to the local climate and competition equipments, helped strengthen his self-confidence."
Shek aims to medal again at the Worlds in Glasgow, Scotland in October, hopefully without the injury that hampered him in Japan, and book his ticket to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
“Earlier, I injured tendons in my right shoulder and my display was affected.“ said Shek. “I was fortunate to have a physical therapist to help relieve the pain ... hopefully I can compete normally at the championships and have better results.“
The World Championships, which look likely to be the biggest ever with 600 athletes registered to take part, is the first of two events that give gymnasts the chance to qualify for Rio, with every athlete who medals in an individual competition sealing a place at the Games.
“Every tournament is independent of each other and results aren't connected, but these good results in the Asian Championships, I believe will leave a good impression on the international referees, who will be at the World Championships.“ added Coach Poon. |

Au becomes second ever HK swimmer to medal at World University Games
|
Swimmer Au Hoi-shun won Hong Kong a silver medal in the women's 50 metre backstroke at the 28th Summer Universiade held on 3 - 14 July in Gwangju, Korea
Australia's Holly Barratt won in 28.04 seconds while Au and South Korean Yu Hyoun-ji both clocked 28.38, just outside Au's Hong Kong record (28.33).
“ I didn't do very well in the previous 100 metre and 200 metre backstrokes and a silver medal in the last individual event came as bit of a surprise.“ admitted 23-year-old Au.
It was only the second time a Hong Kong swimmer had medalled at the World University Games after Hannah Wilson won two golds in 2009.

Chan Chi-fung shines as junior rowers claim two medals
|
Chan Chi-fung helped Hong Kong’s up-and-coming rowers to two medals at the 21st Asian Rowing Junior Championships held on 1 - 8 July in Wuhan, China, claiming individual gold in the junior men's single sculls, and adding silver as part of the quad crew.
Chan saw off strong competition on Honglian Lake from the likes of China, Japan and Iran to take the gold, finishing more than six seconds ahead of his Chinese rival in a time of 7:20.51.
After winning the gold medal, Chan was back on the water combining with Chan Tik-lun, Chau Yee-ping and Lam San-tung for second place in the team event, just missing out to China (6:10.66 to 6:12.24).
A number of the top young rowers will now head to Europe to train with their senior counterparts, with an eye on building a solid under-23 foundation for the upcoming Asian and Olympic Games.
