Fencing team impresses in Korea
|
Hong Kong's fencing team enjoyed a successful trip to Suwon, Korea for the Asian Fencing Championships from 2 to 7 July, returning with 5 bronze medals.
Lam Hin-chung won Hong Kong's first individual medal in the men's sabre securing a bronze medal in the event.
Lam's feat on the opening day was followed by further fine performances from the rest of the squad.
There were four more bronze medals, in women's team foil (Cheng Hiu-lam, Kimberley Vanessa Cheung, Lin Po-heung and Liu Yan-wai); men's team foil (Cheung Ka-long, Cheung Siu-lun, Nicholas Edward Choi, Yeung Chi-ka); women's team epee (Chu Ka-mong, Kong Man-wai, Lin Yik-hei, Yeung Chui-ling) and women's team sabre (Au Sin-ying, Chang Ngai-hing, Ho Siu-in, Lam Hin-wai).
Lam Hin-chung was delighted to end his long wait for an individual medal at the championships, and was hopeful of repeating the feat when he returns to Korea with the rest of the team for the Asian Games in Incheon in September.
ˇ§I waited for a decade, and finally won a personal championships medal, also it's the first individual sabre medal in Hong Kong's history, which is very meaningful to me,ˇ¨ he said, adding that it would be a major confidence boost for Incheon.
ˇ§I hope to play even better in the Asian Games,ˇ¨ he added.
Korea dominated the event, which featured 300 competitors from 26 countries in Asia and Oceania. Hong Kong finished fifth overall, behind Korea, China, Japan and Iran.
Hong Kong sent a team with a mix of experience and exciting young talent, including 17-year-old Chang Ngai-hing, who helped the women's sabre team to their medal just weeks before getting her HKDSE results.
Chang's impressive results at junior level, including a victory at the World Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships in Croatia last year, have led to a scholarship offer from an American university, but first up is a trip to Incheon with the rest of the team for the Asian Games, a whirlwind rise for the teenager, who told local media: ˇ§I only knew I was picked for the Asian Championships in early June. Originally, my plan for summer was to get a job.ˇ¨
ˇ§The competition season for junior fencers is almost over so I was looking forward to the Universiade, Asian and World Junior Championships next year,ˇ¨ she added.

Seven medals for HK badminton players
|
Hong Kong's badminton players were in action for three competitions in North America and Taiwan, winning 1 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Exciting young talent Ng Ka-long almost won the first Grand Prix title of his career at the Canada Open in Vancouver. Unfortunately, former world number one Lee Hyun-il of Korea had too much experience for the 20-year-old, winning the final 21-16, 21-14, but a major breakthrough for Ng doesn't look far away.
Wong Wing-ki took a bronze in the same tournament (also losing to Lee in the semis), and another a week later at the US Open in New York. Cheung Ngan-yi also reached the semi-finals in the women's singles there.
There were three more bronzes for Hong Kong at the Yonex Open Chinese Taipei in Taiwan, as Wei Nan (men's singles), Yip Pui-yin (women's singles) and Chan Yun-lung and Tse Ying-suet (mixed doubles) all reached semis.
