Bowler Mak on fire in Taipei and Hong Kong
|
Hong Kong tenpin bowler Mak Cheuk-yin was on fire in July, reaching four consecutive finals in Taiwan and Hong Kong and winning three.
Mak had a golden couple of weeks. First, he was unstoppable in Taipei, triumphing in the 16th Chinese Taipei International Open Bowling Championships, then the ABF Tour Chinese Taipei 2016 back-to-back.
Mak beat local challenger Wu Hao-ming 257-244 in the first final. Mak’s Hong Kong teammate Wu Siu-hong was third.
"I had struggled in the qualifying and needed the final squad to make the finals," said Mak after his victory. "I did not expect to do well but I am indeed surprised to take top spot in the eight-games roll-off earlier.
"I have finished first and second runner-ups in many tournaments already and I am delighted to break that losing streak.”
The following day, Mak brushed aside local player and debutant Hsu Chintsai in the final of the inaugural ABF event, 267-222.
Mak returned home for two more tournaments and reached the podium in the first and won the second.
Mak was denied his third consecutive title by the top seed Ryan Lalisang of Indonesia at the 42nd Hong Kong International Open, but the following day Mak won the ABF Tour Hong Kong 2016, beating another Indonesian opponent. He became the second local bowler to win the title on home soil after Tseng Tak-hin in 2014.
Meanwhile, Kam Siu-lun won the first major title of his career in June. Kam, the top seed, won his first international title with a perfect game in the finals of the Men’s Masters at the Macau China International Open. Kam was relentless against Daisuke Yoshida, and though the Japanese player rattled in strike after strike himself in an effort to stay in touch, he was eventually outclassed 300-249.
Hong Kong also took a bronze from Macau, as Cheung Yuk-fung reached the semis, beaten by Yoshida.
And in the youth category, it was gold and silver, with Yu Ho-yin beating teammate Tse Chun-hin in the final. |

Ho Kwan-kit and Wong Chun-ting brought home the gold at the ITTF World Tour, Slovenia Open.
The pair beat the top seeds, Jeoung Youngsik and Lee Sangsu of South Korea, in resounding fashion, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.
It was the pair’s first title together, though they have both won doubles crowns before with different partners.
And at just 19 (Ho) and 24 (Wong), hopefully the team has many more victories to come.
At the same tournament, Doo Hoi-kem and Lee Ho-ching reached the semis of the women”¦s doubles, and Jiang Tianyi and Lam Siu-hang did the same in the men”¦s.
And there was another bronze position for Hong Kong three weeks later at the Korea Open, when Lee teamed up with Tie Yana to reach the semis. |
