Doo and Lee get confidence boosting win in Croatia ahead of Olympics
|
Youngsters Doo Hoi-kem and Lee Ho-ching had a timely confidence booster ahead of their inclusion in Hong Kong’s Olympic table tennis team as they won the doubles at the Zagreb Open in Croatia.
They stunned the top seeds, South Korea’s Jeon Jihee and Yang Haeun in a gruelling five-game final (3-11, 14-12, 14-12, 4-11, 11-9).
It was sweet revenge for Doo, who (with Tie Yana) had lost to the Korean pair in the final of the Czech Open last year.
And victory was all the more impressive as it was the first time Jeon and Yang had lost all year. “After I lost the final in Czech Republic, finally we won a tournament. This is the first tournament victory for us. We had good preparation for this tournament and this final match. We also spent a lot of time together,” said Doo.
It was a first win for Doo and Lee in only their second appearance in a World Tour final, and should give them plenty of confidence for Rio 2016 after they were named along with Tie in the team.
Ho Kwan-kit, who is also Brazil-bound, had an impressive tournament too, reaching the semi-finals of the men’s singles.
In the junior ranks, there was an impressive four gold medals outcome for Hong Kong at the Thailand Junior and Cadet Open.
Mak Tze-wing won the junior girls’ singles, Lee Ka-yee the cadet girls’, and the junior boys and cadet girls won team titles. |

Kong Man-wai continued her preparation for the Olympic Games with her second medal of the Fencing World Cup season, winning bronze in Legnano, Italy on 20 - 22 May.
Kong, who also won a bronze at a satellite in Bulgaria in March, topped her group and made it to the semis before being beaten by the world No.134 from Spain, Dora Kiskapusi, who went on to win.
Kong will be heading to Rio with Cheung Ka-long and Lin Po-heung and said she hoped to relax and put up a good fight after sealing her place. |

HK men¡¦s squash team wins silver at Asian Championships
|
Hong Kong’s men reached the final at the 18th Asian Squash Team Championships held on 11 - 15 May, but couldn’t see off all-conquering Pakistan to lift the gold in Taipei.
Lee Ho-yin narrowly lost a five-game encounter to Farhan Zaman, and Tang Ming-hong went down 3-0 to Farhan Mehboob in the best-of-three-matches final.
It was the fourth time in a row Pakistan had won the title at the biennial event. It was also the third time a Hong Kong team has won a silver at the event (previously in 1992 and 1996).

|
Veteran Chan Chun-hing prepared for another tilt at the Olympics with bronze at the 22nd Asian Mountain Bike Championships held on 4 - 8 May in Chainat, Thailand.
He finished the course in 1:13:09, behind Japan’s Kohei Yamamoto (1:11:51) and Kazakhstan’s Kirill Kazantsev (1:12:29).
The 35-year-old, who competed at London 2012 and was a silver medallist at the last Asian Games, looked set to retire and go into coaching before finishing third at last year’s Asian Championships convinced him to continue. |
