Bumper haul for Hong Kong cyclists at Asian Championships

The Hong Kong cycling team enjoyed a hugely successful trip to Astana, returning with 5 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Lee Wai-sze and Cheung King-lok led the charge, contributing to 7 of the 11 medals won by the team at the 34th Asian Cycling Championships and the 21st Asian Junior Cycling Championships, both held in the Kazakhstan capital from 21 May to 1 June.

Olympic medallist Lee won 2 golds, in the women¡¦s keirin and 500m time trial, plus a bronze in the sprint.

Twenty-three-year-old Cheung has stepped up in the absence of former world men¡¦s scratch champion Kwok Ho-ting following injury.

He won individual golds in the men¡¦s points race and bronze in the omnium and contributed to team successes in the madison (gold, with Leung Chun-wing) and pursuit (silver, with his brother Cheung King-wai, Leung, and Wu Lok-chun).

Also on the podium in the elite event were Diao Xiaojuan (silver, women¡¦s road race) and Wu (bronze, men¡¦s 1km time trial).

Boding well for the future sustainable world class performances from the team, Leung won bronze in the men¡¦s under-23 individual time trial and Leung Ka-yu took home gold in the men¡¦s junior points race.

Lee, winner of bronze in the keirin at London 2012, outclassed her rivals in the event, beating Kim Wong-yeong of South Korea and favourite Zhong Tianshi of China into second and third respectively. Lee also won the Asian Championships title in the keirin in India last year. The 500m time trial will not be contested at the Games, which only features events on the Olympic programme.

Cheung kick-started Hong Kong¡¦s medals haul with his win in the points race. He finished the 30-kilometre, 120-lap race with 55 points, the highest among 12 riders.

Hong Kong had targeted gold in the elite men¡¦s team pursuit, but on the day they were beaten by a stronger China side and won a very credibly silver.

More than 500 athletes from some 30 countries took part in the championships. Hong Kong finished fifth on the medals table behind Korea, Kazakhstan, Japan and China.
