Cheung Ka-long signs off from fencing's junior ranks with world title
|
Hong Kong Olympian Cheung Ka-long added to his packed trophy cabinet when he took home the foil title at the World Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships, which was held from 1 April to 10 April in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, upsetting one of the favourites in the semis then mounting a thrilling comeback in the final.
Cheung, who has been crowned Asian champion at both junior and senior level, beat Japanese rival Toshiya Saito 15-11.
It was the 19-year-old Cheung's last chance to claim the junior crown as he moves into the senior ranks full-time.
Saito was leading 8-3 in the final before Cheung fought back to 12-10 and then on for the win. Cheung was ranked only 26th by organisers for the draw, Saito 19th, but both upset top-seeds in the semis, Cheung beating second seed Russian Iskander Akhmetov and Saito top seed Italian Guillaume Bianchi.
"It is so nice bagging the title in my last world junior," said Cheung, who ranked 14th in Rio de Janeiro last summer, the first male fencer from Hong Kong to get that far in the Olympics.
"I was a bit tense that I might not be able to deliver in my last World Junior appearance, but it came all the way through for a good performance."
Cheung surprisingly lost in the last 16 of the Asian Juniors earlier this year, but his win in Bulgaria is the first time Hong Kong have ever won men's gold at the event.
He said a more relaxed approach to competition had helped him win the World gold.
"After the Asian Junior Championships defeat, my status was not too good, but I just tried to forget it, not think about winning and just enjoy my last appearance in the World Juniors," he said.
"As for moving into the senior level, I am still young, and will not put myself under too much pressure."
Cheung will get the chance to defend his Asian Championship senior crown in front of his home fans, as the event will be held in Hong Kong in this June.
"The World Junior Championships has given me great confidence, and it is a good start to my career in the senior ranks," he said.
"But playing at home there will also be a bit more pressure. We do not know our opponents yet, first we have to train hard ourselves and hope to fight for gold at home, and not giving ourselves any regrets."

Lee Ho-yin bags gold at the 19th Asian Individual Championships |
Squash player Lee Ho-yin capped a gold for Hong Kong at the 19th Asian Individual Championships held from 26 to 30 April in Chennai, India, while his teammates added three more bronze medals in the same event.
Top seed Lee ensured the title stayed in Hong Kong for another year after he beat the home favourite and second seed Saurav Ghosal. Au Chun-ming, Lee's compatriot and last year's winner, also secured a bronze medal at the event.
Lee recovered from losing the first game to triumph 3-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-7).
"To be honest I was not even thinking about anything past the quarter-finals when I was coming here, so to reach the final and to actually win it feels great," said Lee.
And in a terrific Hong Kong team performance, Au Wing-chi and Tong Tsz-wing both reached the semis of the women's event and got 2 bronzes as well.
